This report explores the determinants of health in the context of their impact on the Black Nova Scotian population. It includes a literature review and the proceedings of a two-day workshop to prioritize identified Black health issues. Based on the findings, key recommendations are made for policy, education, research, and community capacity building.

Rural, Remote and Northern Women’s Health: Policy and Research Directions Final Summary Report

In response to widespread interest in the health issues of rural, remote, and northern populations in Canada, calls for more systematic and applied rural health research and the virtual invisibility of gender analysis in current rural health policy and research, the Centres of Excellence for Women’s Health (CEWH) developed this national study. The purpose was to combine the knowledge of women living in rural and remote areas of Canada with that of community organizations and researchers to develop a policy framework and research agenda on rural and remote women’s health in Canada.

Personal Health Practices

This chapter considers the social context of women's health practices and self-reported health. Results are based on data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) and addresses the following issues: the relationship between women's socio-demographic status and their health practices, the relationship between women's socio-demographic status and their multiple risk- and multiple health-promoting practices, and the relationship between women's self-rated health and their health practices.

Women, Gender and Health: A Review of the Recent Literature

This study presents a broad overview and synthesis of the recent research literature on the major psychosocial influences on women’s health. Part 1 reviews the variability of health among women, with a particular emphasis on diversities in health according to women’s major social roles of partner, parent, and worker. Part 2 reviews research on differences between men and women on various indicators of health and ill-health. This review of the literature identified a number of general gaps in knowledge, particularly with respect to the Canadian context.
