Physical Activity and Obesity in Canadian Women
This chapter provides an overview of the current state of physical activity and overweight/obesity among Canadian women. Attention is paid to the individual and systemic determinants of women's adoption of regular physical activity throughout their lifespan. A summary of the current Canadian recommendations for physical activity and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for obesity prevention through regular physical activity are also provided. A detailed interpretation of the Canadian Community Health Survey provides prevalence rates of physical inactivity, overweight and obesity which are analyzed in relation to gender, socio-economic status, educational level and race.

Overweight and Obesity in Canada: A Population Health Perspective
The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the current state of knowledge related to: 1) the nature and extent of the problem of obesity; 2) the impact of obesity as a case for prevention and control; 3) a population health perspective on the determinants of obesity; and 4) the effectiveness of strategies for addressing obesity and its determinants. A final objective is to identify priorities for future policy-relevant research and present options for promising interventions for reducing population obesity levels.
