Uprooting poverty and planting the seeds for social change: The roots of poverty project

Roots of Poverty Project used a series of community roundtables, forums, focus groups and workshops for participants to contribute their experiences and ideas about poverty and possible solutions.   The group focused on community consultation about social policy, community and individual capacity building, and a qualitative research project documenting the process' impact on its participants.

This project was sponsored by the Prairie Women's Health Centre of Excellence as part of a larger research initiative to examine social assistance policies in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, their impact on women's health, and women's access to justice as recipients of social assistance. The report details the chronology of women's experiences as they engage with the income support system.

Women, Income and Health in Manitoba: An Overview and Ideas for Action

This study looks at that disparity and how income inequality affects the health not only of women living in poverty but of everyone in our society. The link between income and health has a special importance for women. In Manitoba (as in the rest of Canada), poverty discriminates, striking women substantially more frequently and more severely than men.
